Hive Digital Technologies has reached a major milestone in the cryptocurrency mining industry, securing 2% of the global Bitcoin hashrate while operating entirely on renewable energy. The company announced that its facilities now run at 20 exahashes per second (EH/s), cementing its position among the top mining firms worldwide.

Hive’s achievement comes as the industry continues to grapple with concerns over sustainability and energy use. By relying exclusively on hydroelectric power, particularly at its Phase 3 facility in Paraguay, Hive has distinguished itself from competitors who still depend heavily on fossil fuels. This facility currently delivers efficiency of 18 joules per terahash (J/TH), placing it among the most energy-efficient operations in the sector.

The growth has been rapid. Year-to-date, Hive’s hashrate has surged by 233%, with output doubling since May 2025. In August, the company surpassed 16 EH/s before climbing to its current level. At present, Hive mines roughly nine Bitcoin per day while maintaining a 55% margin after electricity costs. Looking ahead, the company projects further expansion, targeting a 25 EH/s capacity and daily production of 12 Bitcoin by U.S. Thanksgiving this year.

These numbers underline the company’s ambition not only to scale its operations but also to redefine industry standards in environmental responsibility. In a sector often criticized for its energy consumption, Hive is betting that renewable power will become both a competitive edge and a regulatory shield as governments worldwide tighten oversight of mining practices.

The choice of Paraguay as a hub is no accident. The country is known for its abundant hydroelectric resources, particularly from the Itaipú Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world. By tapping into this infrastructure, Hive can maintain low energy costs while aligning itself with global climate goals. Investors increasingly view such strategies as a safeguard against future regulatory and reputational risks that may confront less sustainable miners.

Bitcoin mining remains a capital-intensive industry, highly sensitive to energy prices and network difficulty. Yet Hive’s focus on efficiency and renewable energy has allowed it to sustain profitability even in volatile markets. With its current 20 EH/s hashrate representing a meaningful share of global capacity, the firm’s influence within the Bitcoin ecosystem is likely to grow.
