Harmony Confirms Exploit: 4 Billion ONE Tokens Minted Without Authorization, Price Hits Record Low

Four billion ONE tokens appeared out of thin air on Wednesday, as an attacker exploited the Harmony protocol to mint roughly 26% of the token's entire circulating supply in a single unauthorized transaction.

ONE crashed to an all-time low of $0.0005735 during early Asian trading on August 12, as markets absorbed the scale of the supply shock. The price reflects not just panic selling but a mathematical reality: a 26% dilution of circulating supply, executed instantaneously and without the consent of any governance process, represents a fundamental breach of the monetary guarantees underpinning the token.

The exploit was first flagged publicly by X user Juiceberg before Harmony issued any official acknowledgment. That sequencing matters. When a pseudonymous on-chain observer surfaces a critical vulnerability before the protocol's own monitoring systems do, it raises immediate questions about the adequacy of Harmony's real-time security infrastructure. Harmony confirmed the incident and said it is coordinating with centralized exchanges to freeze affected funds, a standard triage measure that can limit an attacker's ability to liquidate stolen or illicitly minted assets.

The mechanism behind the unauthorized minting has not been fully disclosed publicly as of this writing. Smart contract exploits of this type typically involve either a flaw in access control logic, a vulnerability in the minting function itself, or a compromised privileged key that grants administrative minting rights. Each carries different remediation paths and different implications for user trust. A pure smart contract bug can theoretically be patched and the damage ring-fenced; a compromised private key suggests a deeper operational security failure that is harder to walk back.

Supply inflation attacks are among the most damaging category of DeFi exploit because they are difficult to reverse without controversial governance action. Unlike a straightforward token theft, where the question is simply whether funds can be recovered, an unauthorized minting event forces the community to confront an uncomfortable choice: absorb the dilution, burn the illicitly minted tokens through an on-chain governance vote, or pursue a hard fork that rewinds the chain state. Each option carries political and technical costs. The 2022 Rari Capital and Beanstalk exploits demonstrated how quickly community cohesion can fracture under the pressure of deciding who bears the losses.

For Harmony specifically, this is a compounding credibility crisis. The protocol suffered a $100 million bridge hack in June 2022, when attackers compromised the Horizon bridge by obtaining private keys to a multisig wallet. That incident was never fully remediated to the satisfaction of affected users, and the community remained divided over a proposed token minting plan that would have compensated victims through inflation. Wednesday's event arrives against that unresolved backdrop, making any new minting-based remediation proposal politically toxic before it is even drafted.

Exchange coordination to freeze funds is a meaningful short-term lever, but its effectiveness depends on how quickly the attacker moved assets and whether they routed through decentralized venues that cannot be frozen by a phone call. On-chain data will ultimately reveal how much of the 4 billion minted ONE has already been swapped, bridged, or otherwise dispersed beyond the reach of centralized compliance teams.

"Harmony said it is coordinating with exchanges to freeze funds."

Harmony, official statement

The broader DeFi market will be watching how Harmony's governance responds in the coming 48 to 72 hours. A credible, technically specific post-mortem published quickly, paired with a clear remediation proposal that does not simply shift losses onto existing token holders, is the minimum required to arrest the confidence collapse. Absent that, ONE's all-time low of $0.0005735 may prove to be a temporary floor rather than a bottom.
