Google and Coinbase Unveil Open Protocol to Power AI-Driven Stablecoin Payments
Google and Coinbase launch AP2, an open protocol enabling AI-driven payments with stablecoins and traditional methods.
Google is taking a bold step into the convergence of artificial intelligence and digital finance by launching an open-source payment framework designed for AI systems. The initiative, called the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), will allow AI agents—such as apps, bots, and digital assistants—to process payments on behalf of users, with support for multiple methods including stablecoins.
Developed in collaboration with Coinbase, the Ethereum Foundation, and a diverse range of financial and technology firms, AP2 seeks to establish a transparent and secure standard for AI-driven transactions. Other partners include American Express, Salesforce, and Etsy, underscoring the protocol’s ambition to bridge traditional finance and blockchain innovation.
At its core, AP2 relies on two novel mechanisms: “Mandates” and “Verifiable Credentials.” These digital contracts ensure that an AI agent can only act with a user’s explicit authorization, making transactions traceable and auditable. This is designed to address one of the biggest concerns around AI-powered financial tools: accountability. By implementing safeguards that regulators and auditors can easily evaluate, Google hopes to build trust while paving the way for broader adoption.
Stablecoins, such as USDC, stand to benefit most from this shift. Once viewed primarily as speculative instruments, they are increasingly recognized as reliable settlement rails for digital commerce. The AP2 framework makes them a native option alongside credit cards and bank transfers, a move that could normalize their use in mainstream payments. According to blockchain analytics, stablecoin circulation has surged from $205 billion at the beginning of 2025 to $289 billion, reflecting their rising importance in both DeFi and global trade.
“Supporting stablecoins in AP2 means digital assets pegged to fiat are being taken seriously as payment rails for AI-driven commerce,” noted industry analysts. This adoption could enable decentralized applications, merchant platforms, and AI-powered services to handle payments in a seamless and compliant manner.
The timing of AP2’s launch also coincides with intensifying interest from other tech and finance giants. PayPal and Mastercard have already begun experimenting with stablecoins and tokenized funds, while Stripe and Circle continue to push blockchain payment infrastructure. Google’s entry, however, carries additional weight, as its open-source strategy could accelerate standardization across the industry.
For end users, the implications are significant. Imagine a personal shopping assistant capable of securing the best deal and executing a stablecoin payment instantly, or a business AI that manages subscriptions and invoices across multiple platforms in real time. With AP2, those possibilities move closer to reality—delivered in a way that balances innovation with regulatory oversight.
As AI agents become integral to digital commerce, Google and Coinbase’s collaboration may mark the start of a new era: one where blockchain-powered payments are not only integrated into daily transactions but are also safeguarded by transparent, industry-wide standards.
