In a decisive response to escalating violence targeting cryptocurrency professionals, the French government has announced new protective measures, including priority access to emergency police lines and enhanced security protocols for industry figures. The policy shift follows a high-level meeting between Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and key players in the French crypto ecosystem.

The unprecedented move comes amid a disturbing uptick in targeted crimes. According to Éric Larchevêque, co-founder of crypto hardware wallet firm Ledger, there have been at least 50 attacks on crypto professionals over the past year—14 of them in France alone. “The kidnappings have become a real problem,” Larchevêque stated after attending the ministerial meeting. His co-founder was kidnapped and mutilated in January during a violent incident that shook the industry.

The gravity of the threat was underscored this week when the daughter and grandson of a crypto exchange CEO narrowly escaped abduction by masked men in Paris. The botched kidnapping, marked by violence on the streets of the capital, has triggered national alarm and galvanized government action.

Interior Minister Retailleau emphasized that the government is taking these threats seriously. “These repeated kidnappings of professionals in the crypto sector will be fought with specific tools, both immediate and short-term, to prevent, dissuade and hinder in order to protect the industry,” he said.

Under the new measures, crypto entrepreneurs will receive security briefings from elite police units, optional home security audits, and access to dedicated emergency communication lines. In parallel, law enforcement personnel will undergo advanced training in anti-money laundering techniques specific to crypto assets.

The broader context of these measures includes rising concerns about data leaks that could further endanger crypto investors. A recent breach involving Coinbase user information has raised fears that criminals may use such data to profile and target wealthy or high-profile crypto holders.

France’s pivot to proactive protection highlights a stark reality: the success and visibility of digital asset professionals increasingly make them targets for violent crime. In recognizing this, the French government is signaling its commitment to not only regulating the crypto sector but actively safeguarding those who build it.

As the crypto industry continues to integrate into mainstream finance, balancing innovation with personal security may become a defining challenge for nations seeking to lead the digital asset era.
