A groundbreaking development in cross-chain finance has brought Tether's USDT stablecoin from Ethereum to Bitcoin for the first time, using the RGB protocol and Lightning Network. The achievement, led by the former Tricorn team now operating under Utexo, marks a significant milestone for Bitcoin's role in decentralized finance (DeFi).

According to a press release shared with Bitcoin Magazine, the bridge successfully transferred USDT from Ethereum to RGB on Bitcoin, where it now operates as an RGB asset. These tokens can settle directly on Bitcoin's blockchain or move instantly over RGB Lightning, combining the liquidity of stablecoins with Bitcoin's privacy and security.

"This milestone enables Bitcoin to capture stablecoin flows while preserving privacy, self-custody, and the immutability of settlement on Bitcoin," the announcement stated. "Fees are low, settlement is fast, and the design is peer-to-peer."

The Ethereum-to-RGB bridge facilitates seamless movement of stablecoins and other assets into Bitcoin's ecosystem without custodians or intermediaries. Once bridged, assets benefit from RGB's client-side validation architecture, ensuring they remain under user control and private by default. This architecture eliminates the need for federations, validators, or centralized coordinators.

LNFI, a strategic partner in the launch, plans to leverage the bridge to transfer USDT from Ethereum onto RGB Lightning. Acting as a Lightning Service Provider (LSP) on Astra Labs, LNFI will enable "instant, private, cheap, trust-minimized stablecoin swaps" between supported blockchains and RGB Lightning.

The innovation opens up a wide range of use cases, from decentralized trading to cross-chain payments, by connecting Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) networks with Bitcoin’s Lightning Network via RGB. Developers can integrate the bridge into wallets, marketplaces, and financial protocols, enabling users to bridge, hold, and transact stablecoins within Bitcoin's privacy-focused framework.

The engineering team, now part of Utexo, is also developing an interface for private Bitcoin DeFi applications. Future releases will include tools for swapping, transferring, and managing bridged assets, making this technology accessible beyond the developer community.

Currently, the Ethereum-to-RGB bridge is live for developers and early adopters, with plans to expand to additional networks and make public access available through Utexo in the near future.
