Fake News Sparks ASTER Sell-Off Before Swift Market Rebound
ASTER drops 16% after false claims link CZ to token sales, but the market quickly recovers.
The cryptocurrency market witnessed another episode of misinformation-driven turbulence this week as ASTER, the native token of decentralized exchange Aster, plunged nearly 17% following false claims that Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao had dumped millions of tokens. The rumor, which spread rapidly across social media on October 30, sent ASTER tumbling from $1.03 to $0.8566 before the token rebounded as the truth surfaced.
At the time of writing, ASTER was trading at $0.9853, recovering most of its earlier losses. Despite the brief panic, daily trading volume spiked by 16% to $674.7 million, according to CoinMarketCap. With a circulating supply of over 2 billion tokens, ASTER now stands as the 46th-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization—an indication of its growing prominence in the DeFi ecosystem.
Aster, developed by YZi Labs, operates as a multi-chain decentralized exchange that supports trading across BNB Chain, Solana, Ethereum, and Arbitrum. It facilitates both spot and perpetual futures markets, aiming to blend liquidity and interoperability. The project’s association with CZ, through his investment arm, likely amplified the market’s reaction to the unfounded rumor.
The misinformation wave began with a viral post on X (formerly Twitter) alleging that CZ had sold 35 million ASTER tokens. Within hours, CZ publicly refuted the claim, labeling it “fake news.” Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain later confirmed that the transaction in question was merely an internal transfer between Binance hot wallets, not a sell-off. This clarification quickly diffused the panic, and trading sentiment began to stabilize.
The broader crypto market, however, still suffered notable volatility. Data from CoinGlass indicated over $884 million in liquidations during the same 24-hour period. ASTER accounted for $7.11 million of that total, while competing DEX token Hyperliquid (HYPE) saw a single liquidation of $21.42 million, underscoring the scale of market-wide leverage unwinds triggered by rumor-induced swings.
From a technical standpoint, ASTER remains in a delicate position. The token’s 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) currently hovers around 45.5—suggesting waning buying pressure without entering oversold territory. Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram is showing smaller negative bars, indicating that bearish momentum is slowing, though a full reversal has yet to emerge. Analysts suggest that a sustained move above the $1–$1.02 range could signal a confirmed recovery, while a break below $0.92 might reignite downward pressure toward $0.85.
The ASTER incident highlights the fragility of sentiment in crypto markets and the outsized influence of misinformation on price action. Even as blockchain transparency improves, social media remains a potent amplifier of false narratives. For traders and investors alike, the episode serves as a reminder of how swiftly rumor can override fundamentals—at least until facts catch up.
