Ethereum is experiencing renewed upward momentum as excitement builds ahead of the Fusaka upgrade, with the asset rising around 9 percent in the last 24 hours. Trading near $3,100 and logging more than $30 billion in daily volume, according to CoinGecko data, ETH’s surge reflects both a broader crypto market recovery and mounting optimism surrounding one of the network’s most important improvements since Pectra.

Scheduled to activate on December 3, 2025 at slot 13,164,544, Fusaka combines execution-layer updates from Osaka with consensus-layer refinements from Fulu. This coordinated upgrade aims to streamline Ethereum’s architecture, reduce inefficiencies, and prepare the network for significantly heavier data demands as on-chain activity expands across decentralized applications, rollups, and gaming ecosystems.

At the heart of Fusaka is PeerDAS, a new approach to data sampling that sharply reduces the storage requirements for nodes participating in data availability checks. Developers believe this change could improve Ethereum’s effective scalability by as much as eightfold, a major boost for Layer 2 networks that rely heavily on efficient data management to deliver fast and inexpensive transactions. By lowering the burden on node operators, PeerDAS lays the groundwork for more responsive and cost-effective rollups in the years ahead.

Another key component of Fusaka is its enhanced flexibility around blob capacity adjustments. Instead of waiting for large, infrequent upgrades, Ethereum will now be able to increase blob throughput more smoothly as demand grows. The update also modifies the blob fee formula to promote more predictable data costs during periods of congestion. These improvements are expected to ensure that developers can build more complex applications without facing sudden spikes in network costs.

Although Fusaka does not target reductions in base fees, analysts widely view it as a foundational leap that will support long-term scaling. As more activity migrates to Layer 2, improving how data is handled at the base layer becomes essential for maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Fusaka’s adjustments are designed to anticipate this transition and position Ethereum for sustained growth.

The upgrade has undergone extensive testing on public testnets, including Holesky and Sepolia, and will activate automatically without requiring any action from everyday users. Following its deployment, Ethereum will roll out two Blob Parameter Only upgrades—one on December 9 and another on January 7—to gradually raise blob capacity and fully operationalize Fusaka’s scaling features.

The market’s reaction suggests confidence that this upgrade will meaningfully enhance Ethereum’s infrastructure rather than simply maintain it. If Fusaka performs as expected, Ethereum could strengthen its position as the leading platform for high-performance decentralized applications at a time when competition across Layer 1s and Layer 2s continues to intensify.
