The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled a new initiative designed to bridge blockchain and artificial intelligence, signaling a belief that AI will play a pivotal role in Ethereum’s long-term evolution. The newly formed dAI team, led by core developer Davide Crapis, has been tasked with developing protocols and standards to ensure that Ethereum becomes the preferred settlement and coordination layer for AI agents.

Crapis framed the initiative as a natural extension of Ethereum’s mission, noting that autonomous AI agents will increasingly need trusted infrastructure to discover, verify, and transact with one another.“The opportunity is comparable to the early days of DeFi,”Crapis suggested, predicting that grassroots experimentation may lay the foundation before institutional adoption follows.

A short-term focus for the dAI team is the advancement of ERC-8004, a proposed standard that defines identity and interoperability for AI agents operating on-chain. By formalizing how agents authenticate and communicate, the team hopes to prevent fragmentation and create a robust ecosystem for autonomous coordination.

The initiative extends beyond technical standardization. In the longer term, the dAI team aims to construct a decentralized AI stack that provides open, verifiable, and censorship-resistant alternatives to corporate-controlled systems. According to Crapis, this is a safeguard against the risk of AI infrastructure consolidating under a handful of dominant players—a growing concern as tech giants race to commercialize proprietary AI models and services.

Ethereum’s move comes amid a broader wave of AI experimentation across Web3 ecosystems. Networks such as Solana, Avalanche, and Polygon have all seen the rise of projects building tokenized AI marketplaces, decentralized compute networks, and data-sharing protocols tailored for machine-to-machine interactions. Developers are increasingly viewing blockchains not just as financial rails but as neutral coordination layers for autonomous systems.

The Ethereum Foundation’s leadership in this area could prove decisive. Just as Ethereum served as the launchpad for decentralized finance, NFTs, and DAOs, it now seeks to establish itself as the default hub for AI integration. If successful, the dAI initiative could redefine Ethereum’s role in the next decade, positioning the network as the bedrock for decentralized, trustworthy AI infrastructure.

By investing early in standards and open frameworks, the Ethereum Foundation is betting that the convergence of blockchain and artificial intelligence will reshape not only decentralized technology but also the governance of AI itself.
