Ethereum Co-Founder Moves $6 Million to Kraken as Whales Accumulate $1.6 Billion
Ethereum co-founder Jeffrey Wilcke moves $6M in ETH to Kraken as whales scoop up $1.6B, highlighting split market sentiment.
Ethereum markets faced renewed speculation on Friday after blockchain data revealed that Jeffrey Wilcke, one of the network’s original co-founders and developers, transferred 1,500 ETH to Kraken, valued at approximately six million dollars. The move coincided with renewed price weakness in Ether, which slipped below the $4,000 threshold, prompting concern that Wilcke could be preparing to liquidate a portion of his holdings.
According to on-chain analytics firm Lookonchain, the transfer took place as Ethereum’s price dropped to $3,938, extending a decline that has seen the asset lose more than 20 percent from its recent highs. While moving tokens to an exchange wallet does not necessarily signal a sale, traders often interpret such transactions as bearish, given the possibility that assets may be unloaded into the open market.
This is not Wilcke’s first major movement of funds to Kraken. In August, he deposited roughly $9.2 million in Ether to the exchange, and earlier in May, he shifted a staggering $262 million, nearly his entire stash at the time. Analysts suggested then that much of it was likely redistributed across new wallets rather than liquidated. Still, the pattern of recurring transfers has raised questions about whether one of Ethereum’s earliest insiders is quietly reducing his exposure.
Wilcke, who left active Ethereum development following the early years of disputes and forks, has since focused on other projects, including Grid Games, a studio he co-founded with his brother Joey. He has previously acknowledged using portions of his Ether allocation to finance external ventures.
Despite the apparent selling pressure from one co-founder, larger market participants are signaling the opposite. Lookonchain noted that around 15 wallets accumulated more than 405,000 ETH, worth over $1.5 billion, over the past 48 hours. These purchases reportedly drew liquidity from platforms such as Kraken, Galaxy Digital, BitGo, and FalconX. The large-scale accumulation highlights how institutional investors and high-net-worth players continue to treat Ether’s price dips as buying opportunities.
The diverging behavior between a high-profile insider and Ethereum whales underscores the uncertainty currently surrounding the market. On one hand, a respected co-founder moving tokens to exchanges feeds concerns of further downside pressure. On the other, billion-dollar inflows from whales reflect confidence that Ether remains undervalued and poised for recovery.
For now, Ethereum trades just below the $4,000 mark, weighed down by a broader slump in digital assets following the recent Bybit hack and heightened volatility across the crypto sector. Whether Wilcke’s latest move proves to be a minor footnote or a precursor to a broader sell-off will likely depend on how much conviction the whales can sustain as they continue to absorb supply.
