UAE telecommunications giant du has taken a major step into the digital asset economy by introducing Cloud Miner, the country’s first telecom-led crypto mining service. This initiative positions du at the intersection of connectivity and blockchain innovation, offering residents a compliant, subscription-based way to mine cryptocurrencies directly through its nationwide data center infrastructure.

The Cloud Miner service allows users to rent computational power securely and transparently without the usual complexities of hardware installation or maintenance. Subscribers can begin mining immediately after registration, benefiting from potential Bitcoin rewards while relying on du’s established ICT backbone. According to the company, this model provides an eco-efficient and user-friendly gateway for individuals seeking exposure to crypto mining under full regulatory oversight.

du’s Chief ICT Officer,Jasim AlAwadi, emphasized that the new platform reflects the company’s vision for a sustainable digital finance ecosystem. “This service embodies our commitment to innovation, leveraging our robust data center capabilities to secure a sustainable future for blockchain technology in the UAE,” he stated.

Under the program, customers can participate through an online auction hosted between November 3 and 9, selecting mining packages starting at 250 terahashes per second (TH/s) with 24-month contracts. Each subscription includes competitive pricing, fixed fees, and integrated security layers such as two-factor authentication and UAE Pass verification to ensure compliance with local KYC and AML regulations.

The offering also highlights du’s intention to expand its technology portfolio beyond telecom into the broader Web3 and fintech landscape. By transforming existing infrastructure into a mining-as-a-service (MaaS) platform, the company joins a growing list of global telecoms experimenting with blockchain-based revenue streams.

This initiative arrives amid increasing institutional mining activity across the UAE. The region has recently witnessed significant investment from companies like Marathon Digital and Zero Two, a subsidiary of a UAE sovereign wealth fund, which jointly launched one of the Middle East’s largest Bitcoin mining operations in Abu Dhabi. Similarly, Phoenix Group, another UAE-based digital asset firm, went public last year following its rapid expansion in the sector.

However, du’s entry marks a first for the telecom industry in the Emirates, blending digital infrastructure expertise with crypto innovation. On the international front, parallels can be drawn with Deutsche Telekom’s blockchain division, MMS, which is developing a pilot project to mine Bitcoin using surplus renewable energy in collaboration with Germany’s Bankhaus Metzler.

Analysts suggest that du’s move could catalyze further corporate participation in blockchain technologies within the Gulf region, particularly as the UAE continues to strengthen its regulatory framework for digital assets. By providing a secure, accessible entry point for everyday users, du’s Cloud Miner not only diversifies its service portfolio but also signals how traditional telecom providers can evolve into enablers of decentralized finance.
