In a politically charged resignation, Czech Republic’s Justice Minister Pavel Blazek stepped down on Friday after his ministry accepted and sold a massive Bitcoin donation earlier this year—sparking allegations of money laundering and public outrage ahead of critical national elections.
Blazek, a key figure in Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s conservative Civic Democratic Party and a close political ally, cited the need to preserve governmental stability. “I wasn’t aware of any wrongdoing,” he stated, “but I don’t want the coalition to suffer because of this.” His ministry reportedly sold the donated bitcoins for over 1 billion Czech koruna (more than $45 million).
Prime Minister Fiala accepted the resignation, praising Blazek’s service and asserting that his actions had been in good faith. However, the timing of the scandal—mere months before the October 3-4 parliamentary elections—has dealt a blow to the coalition government.
The controversy stems from the source of the Bitcoin donation: an individual previously convicted of drug trafficking and other criminal activities. Opposition leaders, particularly from the populist ANO party led by former Prime Minister Andrej Babis, seized on the issue, accusing Blazek’s ministry of potential money laundering and demanding accountability.
Key questions remain unanswered. Authorities have yet to clarify the origin of the bitcoins or the donor’s motives. Critics argue that the acceptance of such funds—regardless of intent—reflects severe lapses in judgment and due diligence by the Justice Ministry.
The case is now under investigation by the Czech police’s organized crime unit, further intensifying the political heat. With the ANO party currently leading in the polls, the scandal could shift the balance of power in the upcoming elections.
The resignation highlights growing concerns over the intersection of digital currencies and public accountability. As cryptocurrency donations become more frequent globally, governments are increasingly grappling with the transparency and legality of such transactions.
