CZ Challenges Coinbase to Embrace BNB Chain Projects After BNB Joins Listing Roadmap
CZ urges Coinbase to list more BNB Chain projects after BNB joins its roadmap, reigniting debate over listing transparency and exchange fees.
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has called on Coinbase to expand its listings to include more BNB Chain–based projects, following the U.S. exchange’s decision to add Binance’s native token, BNB, to its official roadmap. The move sparked renewed debate over listing transparency and the use of fees in exchange listing processes.
Coinbase’s roadmap inclusion signals that the company is evaluating the technical and regulatory feasibility of listing BNB, though it does not guarantee trading activation. The exchange typically conducts infrastructure testing, liquidity assessments, and compliance reviews before enabling trading for new assets. Coinbase clarified that roadmap entries are only preliminary indicators meant to inform the public of ongoing evaluation.
BNB rose by more than 3% this week, trading around $1,179 at press time, after reaching a high of $1,370 earlier in the week. Its market capitalization now stands at roughly $164 billion, reflecting renewed investor interest as market watchers reacted to both Coinbase’s announcement and Zhao’s comments.
CZ’s statement reignited a long-standing discussion over whether exchanges should list tokens from rival blockchains and under what conditions. “I would urge Coinbase to list more BNB Chain projects,” Zhao said on X. “Binance has listed several Base projects. Don’t think Coinbase has listed a single BNB Chain project yet. And it’s a more active chain.” His remarks highlighted the growing expectation among users that major exchanges demonstrate openness and cross-chain neutrality in their listings.
The debate over listing models has intensified amid broader scrutiny of exchange practices. Some industry figures have accused platforms of adopting “pay-to-play” systems where token issuers must pay significant fees to be listed, while others argue that certain fees help fund market-making or promotional efforts essential for liquidity and visibility.
Cecilia Hsueh, Chief Strategy Officer at MEXC Exchange, commented that transparent listing policies are critical to maintaining credibility. She noted that exchanges tailor their models to market maturity, liquidity levels, and regional regulations, and that modest listing fees can be justifiable if clearly disclosed.
For Coinbase, adding BNB to its roadmap could mark a strategic shift toward broader interoperability between ecosystems. BNB Chain hosts a growing number of decentralized applications and developers, and greater representation on U.S. exchanges could strengthen its mainstream presence. However, regulatory complexities and potential competitive sensitivities continue to influence such decisions.
In the short term, BNB’s modest price increase reflects trader optimism and heightened social media attention. Yet, the larger significance of this moment lies in the evolving relationship between centralized exchanges and blockchain ecosystems — a relationship increasingly defined by transparency, fairness, and cross-chain collaboration.
