Cronos is pushing deeper into the intersection of artificial intelligence and digital payments with the launch of its x402 PayTech Hackathon, a developer-focused initiative designed to accelerate experimentation with AI-native financial applications. The program offers a forty-two-thousand-dollar prize pool and invites teams to build systems where automated agents can initiate, verify, and settle on-chain value transfers across the Cronos network.

The hackathon arrives on the heels of a major infrastructure overhaul that dramatically improved network performance. Recent upgrades reduced gas fees by roughly ninety percent, pushed daily activity to nearly four times previous levels, and compressed block times to below a single second. Armed with these improvements, Cronos is positioning itself as a foundation for sophisticated financial tooling, institutional tokenization pipelines, and a new generation of AI-driven transaction models.

According to Mirko Zhao, head of Cronos Labs, the event represents the beginning of a shift toward applications where AI systems handle not only data processing but actual economic interactions. Outstanding teams may continue their work beyond the event through research grants, incubator programs, or potential partnerships with ecosystem stakeholders. With more than five hundred developers already building on Cronos and direct exposure to Crypto.com’s audience of approximately one hundred fifty million users, successful projects have a realistic path toward rapid scaling. The network currently ranks among the top fifteen blockchains by total value secured, holding more than six billion dollars in user assets and surpassing one hundred million transactions since its launch.
