Coinbase has announced the acquisition of Echo, an onchain fundraising platform founded by prominent crypto investor and influencer Cobie, in a deal valued at roughly $375 million. The purchase represents a major step in the exchange’s broader effort to shape the next generation of compliant, blockchain-native capital formation.

Echo, which emerged two years ago as an experimental platform for decentralized fundraising, quickly evolved into a hub for Web3 founders seeking transparent and verifiable ways to raise capital. Coinbase’s move to bring Echo under its wing signals growing confidence in the future of onchain capital markets and their integration into traditional financial ecosystems.

Cobie, whose real name is Jordan Fish, reflected on the sale with a characteristic mix of irony and humility. “When I started building Echo two years ago, I knew it had a 95% chance of failing,” he wrote in a post following the announcement. “To be honest, I couldn’t really imagine any other outcome, but I thought at least it may be a noble failure worth attempting. I certainly didn’t think Echo would be sold to Coinbase, but here we are.”

Under the terms of the acquisition, Echo will continue to operate as an independent brand while Coinbase integrates Sonar — Echo’s flagship public sale product — into its ecosystem. The companies plan to give founders and investors direct access to token launches and onchain fundraising tools through Coinbase’s existing platform.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong emphasized the cultural and technological significance of the acquisition. In addition to the Echo deal, Armstrong revealed that Coinbase purchased Cobie’s originalUpOnlyNFT — a digital emblem of Cobie’s long-running crypto podcast — for $25 million. Calling it “a piece of crypto culture worth preserving,” Armstrong noted that the NFT will be featured in Coinbase’s onchain heritage collection, a new initiative aimed at archiving digital artifacts that have shaped the industry’s identity.

This acquisition continues a busy year for Coinbase in terms of mergers and expansion. The company recently acquired crypto derivatives exchange Deribit in a multi-billion dollar deal, signaling a clear push into the global derivatives market. Earlier in 2025, Coinbase also brought in the Opyn leadership team to enhance its onchain markets infrastructure and acquired the founders of Sensible to develop more accessible DeFi tools.

For Coinbase, Echo represents both a technological addition and a symbolic one — a bridge between early grassroots crypto experimentation and the maturing world of institutional-grade blockchain finance. As Web3 fundraising evolves from an idealistic concept to a structured industry, Coinbase appears determined to position itself at the center of that transformation.
