Coinbase Embraces Pudgy Penguins, Sparking PENGU Surge
Coinbase's adoption of a Pudgy Penguins avatar sparks a 60% PENGU rally, hinting at deeper cultural and financial shifts in crypto.
Coinbase’s brief yet strategic branding shift has rippled through the crypto community, with surprisingly tangible results. The exchange, known for its signature blue logo, temporarily replaced its X (formerly Twitter) profile picture with a Pudgy Penguins NFT—an image that quickly became symbolic of a broader narrative.
Within minutes of the switch, PENGU—the utility token tied to the penguin-themed ecosystem—skyrocketed by more than 60% before settling into a correction. Despite the pullback, PENGU closed the week up over 35%, riding the momentum fueled by speculation, social buzz, and deeper ecosystem signals.
The NFT change, accompanied by the playful caption "new pfp, who dis," wasn't an isolated move. Coinbase was joined by other major players—VanEck, MoonPay, and AwakenTax—who swapped their avatars to Pudgy Penguins, reinforcing the impression of a coordinated campaign. On-chain data showed a staggering 690% increase in NFT trading volume for Pudgy Penguins within 24 hours, with the collection's floor price jumping from 9 ETH to 11.58 ETH.
Fueling the speculation was the synchronicity with the Pudgy Penguins official account, which mirrored Coinbase’s move. Rumors of a possible partnership between Coinbase and Igloo Inc., the firm behind the NFT collection, began circulating, although no official collaboration has been confirmed.
Behind the viral stunt was pseudonymous crypto influencer AlexOnChain, who took temporary control of Coinbase’s social media and later announced a full-time role as the company’s first "CT Lead." Alex, previously with Binance, emphasized a shift toward "social-native communications"—a more authentic, community-driven dialogue with crypto Twitter.
“This is about helping people rediscover what Coinbase means to the culture of crypto," Alex explained. "The comms need to be direct, transparent, and engaging. It’s a big job. That’s why I took it.”
Adding fuel to PENGU’s momentum, the U.S. SEC acknowledged Canary Capital’s filing for a spot PENGU ETF, marking a potentially transformative moment for the token’s market legitimacy. While regulatory hurdles remain, the mere acceptance of the filing signals serious institutional interest.
What began as a profile picture swap has evolved into a complex narrative touching on branding, community engagement, influencer-led communications, and emerging financial instruments. In a space where symbols carry weight, Coinbase’s penguin pivot reflects a deeper strategy: culture and finance are no longer separate in Web3—they're inextricably linked.
