Chiliz has positioned itself at the forefront of sports-focused blockchain innovation by becoming the first SportFi company to secure a license under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. Through its subsidiary, Socios Europe Services Limited (SES), the firm obtained authorisation from the Malta Financial Services Authority, granting it EU-wide recognition as a regulated crypto-asset service provider. This breakthrough gives Chiliz and its fan engagement platform, Socios.com, a decisive advantage in expanding across all 27 member states while setting a regulatory precedent for the fast-growing SportFi sector.

The MiCA license allows SES to operate under strict European standards, covering custody and administration of crypto assets, exchanges between tokens and fiat currency, placement of digital assets, and transfers on behalf of clients. These activities form the backbone of MiCA’s regulatory scope and provide enhanced safeguards for consumers. While features such as polls, loyalty programs, and third-party applications on Socios.com remain outside MiCA’s jurisdiction, they will continue to complement the regulated services and enhance fan interaction.

For more than 400 million fans across Europe, this marks a new chapter in accessing official fan tokens under clear rules and legal protections. The move reassures users that their participation in fan token markets is transparent and secure, while also giving sports organisations stronger confidence in partnering with Socios.com. The development is being hailed as a defining moment for SportFi, a sector that merges passion for sport with blockchain-based financial ecosystems.

In parallel with the MiCA authorisation, Chiliz published a white paper for its CHZ token that complies with European Securities and Markets Authority guidelines. This step ensures investors and stakeholders receive transparent, standardised information about the digital currency underpinning Socios.com. The company is also working on registering individual white papers for its suite of fan tokens, further extending transparency to the broader ecosystem that supports dozens of major clubs and leagues.

From October 1, 2025, Socios.com will formally transition operations to Socios Europe Services Limited, introducing new complaint-handling processes and updated legal documentation accessible through a dedicated Legal Hub. This structural shift underscores the company’s commitment to regulatory compliance, consumer protection, and long-term sustainability.

By combining MiCA licensing with a compliant CHZ framework, Chiliz has strengthened its dual role as both a financial innovator and a cultural bridge between sports institutions and their global fan bases. It is not only a regulatory milestone but also a strategic shift that demonstrates how blockchain applications can mature within structured legal systems. As the SportFi movement continues to evolve, Chiliz’s achievement may serve as the blueprint for how fan engagement platforms integrate with Europe’s financial infrastructure, transforming fandom into a legally protected, blockchain-powered economy.
