Cash App Expands Crypto Reach with Instant Bitcoin and Global Stablecoin Payments
Cash App adds instant Bitcoin and stablecoin payments, expanding crypto access for 58 million users worldwide.
Cash App is moving deeper into the crypto economy. The payments platform owned by Block Inc. has unveiled a sweeping update that allows instant Bitcoin payments and global support for stablecoins, marking one of the company’s most ambitious pushes into digital assets.
The new feature, called Bitcoin Payments with USD, lets users pay merchants in Bitcoin even if they don’t hold any of the cryptocurrency. Instead, Cash App converts U.S. dollars from the customer’s balance into Bitcoin in real time through the Lightning Network, settling the transaction instantly for the recipient.
By eliminating the need to hold BTC, the app removes one of the key barriers to crypto payments while avoiding taxable Bitcoin sales. According to the company, this upgrade effectively opens the door for all 58 million Cash App users to use Bitcoin in everyday transactions without friction.
Cash App also introduced a “Bitcoin Map,” an interactive tool that helps users locate nearby businesses that accept Bitcoin and pay them directly through the app. The company said the map is designed to strengthen local economies that have adopted digital currencies as part of daily commerce.
In the second quarter of 2023, Cash App generated $44 million in gross profit from $2.4 billion in Bitcoin sales—a signal of how central crypto has become to its ecosystem.
“Bitcoin was created as peer-to-peer money, and Cash App is building the tools that allow it to operate that way—fast, open, and borderless,” said Miles Suter, head of Bitcoin at Block. He described the update as part of a broader effort to make digital currencies practical for both consumers and merchants.
The platform’s new stablecoin functionality allows users to send and receive stablecoins internationally, with incoming payments automatically converted into U.S. dollars. This feature aims to provide global interoperability without exposure to crypto price swings.
Suter characterized stablecoins as a bridge between traditional finance and the Bitcoin future: “The traditional fiat system is Money 1.0. Bitcoin is Money 2.0—the end goal. Stablecoins are Money 1.5, an improvement on the old system but not a competitor to Bitcoin.”
Looking ahead, Block’s long-term strategy focuses on self-custody. The company recently launched Bitkey, a hardware wallet designed to let users control their own funds. Suter confirmed that a feature enabling automatic transfers from Cash App to self-custody wallets is planned for 2026.
Cash App’s first real-world trial of Lightning-powered Bitcoin payments came earlier this year through Square terminals at Compass Coffee cafés in Washington, D.C.—a pilot that hinted at the broader integration announced today.
With this latest update, Block Inc. appears intent on turning Bitcoin from a speculative asset into a functional currency for millions of everyday users worldwide.
