BRC2.0 Brings Ethereum’s Smart Contract Power to Bitcoin’s Token Layer
BRC2.0 integrates Ethereum’s virtual machine into Bitcoin’s BRC20 protocol, enabling smart contracts and programmable tokens.
Bitcoin has taken a major step toward programmability with the launch of BRC2.0, a protocol upgrade that integrates Ethereum’s virtual machine (EVM) into the BRC20 token standard. Activated at block 912,690, the change opens the door for tokens on Bitcoin to become fully programmable, with functionality previously reserved for Ethereum and its ecosystem.
The upgrade was announced on September 1 by Ordinals developer Best in Slot, who collaborated with the pseudonymous BRC20 creator, Domo, to execute the rollout. Instead of treating BRC20 indexers as little more than balance trackers, BRC2.0 embeds a customized EVM execution engine directly into the off-chain systems that interpret the protocol’s rules. The result is a transformation from simple calculators into full Turing-complete computers, capable of executing smart contracts.
By adopting the EVM, Bitcoin developers gain immediate access to the largest smart contract environment in the world, complete with Solidity, widely used developer tools, and countless open-source libraries. This dramatically reduces the need to build an entirely new developer base and accelerates the possibility of advanced decentralized applications—such as lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, and more—emerging on Bitcoin’s infrastructure.
Domo emphasized the significance of merging the two ecosystems, describing the goal as “combining the two gold standards: Bitcoin as the most decentralized and secure network, and the EVM as the most proven virtual machine.” The intention is to deliver Ethereum-style composability and programmability, while harnessing Bitcoin’s reputation for unmatched security.
Adoption has already begun, with UniSat Wallet integrating support for BRC2.0 into its extension wallet. This integration allows users to store, transfer, and manage the new class of programmable Bitcoin-based assets, providing the necessary infrastructure for early use cases. The execution engine’s open-source design is also meant to encourage other indexers to adopt it, ensuring ecosystem cohesion rather than fragmentation.
The long-term implications of BRC2.0 could prove transformative. For years, Bitcoin has been viewed primarily as a store of value and a base layer for financial sovereignty, while Ethereum has led the way in decentralized applications. By bridging Bitcoin’s network with Ethereum’s execution environment, developers are attempting to unite the two dominant paradigms of the crypto world. If successful, the upgrade could redefine Bitcoin’s role in decentralized finance, positioning it not just as digital gold, but as a foundation for programmable money and applications.
