Bo Hines Leaves U.S. Crypto Council Leadership, Patrick Witt to Step In

Bo Hines, head of the Presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets — commonly referred to as the “crypto council” — will step down from his position. A former college football player and crypto investor, Hines will return to the private sector but will continue advising White House AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks on artificial intelligence matters.

Hines confirmed the move on X, stating that he will remain supportive of U.S. crypto ecosystem growth. Appointed by President Donald Trump in December 2024, Hines acted as a liaison between the White House, the crypto industry, and legislators. By April 2025, he had met with over 150 industry stakeholders.

His deputy, Patrick Witt, is set to take over as council chief. Witt previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management during Trump’s first term. His political career included bids for Georgia’s 10th congressional district and for state insurance commissioner, though he lost in the Republican primary.

In 2025, Witt rejoined government service as deputy director of the crypto council and acting director of the Department of Defense’s Office of Strategic Capital, which oversees investments in emerging technologies. While Witt has no direct crypto industry background, he brings strong experience in policy and national security.

Hines and Witt share a college football connection — Witt played quarterback at Yale University and had a brief stint with the New Orleans Saints.

With Witt taking the helm, the crypto council will continue steering federal digital asset policy while maintaining coordination between government and industry, now with a new leader’s perspective.
