Bitmine Crosses 5.77M ETH Holdings, Controls Nearly 5% of Ethereum Supply
Bitmine Immersion Technologies has amassed 5.77 million ETH, worth over $11 billion at current prices, giving the entity control of approximately 4.8% of Ethereum's circulating supply. The latest acquisition of 7,430 ETH pushes the company closer to an apparent 6 million token target, positioning it among the largest single holders of the blockchain's native asset globally.
The milestone reflects an aggressive institutional accumulation strategy that mirrors patterns seen in corporate Bitcoin treasuries over the past two years. Tom Lee, associated with Bitmine, has reportedly been driving the push toward the 6 million ETH threshold. At that level, Bitmine would control roughly 5% of Ethereum's supply, a concentration level that rivals major institutional players and raises questions about market structure and centralization.
Bitmine's total crypto and cash holdings now stand at $11.5 billion. The ETH position alone represents the bulk of that portfolio value. At an implied price of approximately $1,900 per token, the math checks out: 5.77 million ETH multiplied by $1,900 equals roughly $10.96 billion. The gap to $11.5 billion suggests additional holdings in other assets or cash reserves.
The accumulation comes as institutional interest in Ethereum has intensified since 2023. Grayscale, Fidelity, and other traditional finance players have built significant positions in ETH through spot ETFs and proprietary vehicles. Bitmine's approach differs: rather than offering a product to retail investors, the company is building a treasury position directly. This strategy echoes MicroStrategy's aggressive Bitcoin buying campaign, which has made the software company one of the world's largest corporate Bitcoin holders with over 386,000 BTC.
Concentration of this magnitude carries risks. A single entity controlling 4.8% of Ethereum's supply could theoretically influence price movements through large liquidations or acquisitions. Regulatory scrutiny around market dominance and custody practices may intensify if Bitmine continues accumulating. The feasibility of reaching 6 million tokens without moving market prices significantly also remains an open question. Each additional large purchase could face increasing slippage as liquidity tightens around larger position sizes.
Ethereum's supply is approximately 120 million tokens. Bitmine's 5.77 million represents a meaningful slice of that pie. For comparison, the largest known individual holder, Vitalik Buterin (Ethereum's creator), holds roughly 333,500 ETH. Institutional holders collectively now control a much larger percentage, but Bitmine's single-entity position stands out for its scale and rapid growth.
Whether Bitmine reaches the 6 million target depends on market conditions and price movements. The company has the capital to do so, with $11.5 billion in total holdings. The question is whether it can accumulate that volume without significantly pushing ETH higher. If Bitmine succeeds, it would represent a clear signal that major institutions view Ethereum as a long-term strategic asset worth holding, not just trading.
