Bitcoin Volatility Nears 2026 Lows Ahead of Fed Meeting and $12B Options Expiry

Bitcoin volatility is closing in on its 2026 lows as K33 Research points to thin trading activity. DVOL sits near 37 and Bollinger Bands span about 6.5% of price, with the FOMC meeting on October 28 and a roughly $12 billion options expiry on October 30.

Bitcoin volatility is closing in on its lowest levels of 2026, with K33 Research attributing the calm to thin trading activity ahead of a cluster of potential market catalysts. Bitcoin traded between $82,000 and $83,000 in mid-to-late October.

Bitcoin's 7-day realized volatility is near multi-year lows. Bollinger Bands, a gauge of price range around a moving average, span about 6.5% of price. That is among the tightest readings in the past two and a half years.

Implied volatility is similarly subdued. Deribit's DVOL index, a 30-day implied volatility measure, sat around 37, among the lowest levels of the past five years. Near-term at-the-money implied volatility is in the low-to-mid 30s percent.

The price range has been narrow. Bitcoin was capped near its yearly open of $87,500 for 14 straight days in early October and has since drifted into the low $80,000s.

Several events are close. The FOMC meets on October 28, and a Bitcoin options expiry worth roughly $12 billion is set for October 30. September CPI showed inflation at 3.7% year over year, against 3.6% expected. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined to signal whether the FOMC would raise rates again, speaking at an IMF event in Bangkok earlier this month. Traders are also bracing for the US midterm elections.

Structural or a warning sign

Low volatility does not by itself point to an imminent move. Part of the decline appears structural, tied to US spot Bitcoin ETFs and corporate treasury holdings. Annual realized volatility has run between 40% and 47% in 2026, against historical averages that frequently exceeded 80%.

Similar low-volatility conditions in the past have preceded 30% price swings in either direction within months. The timeframe is broad, and the data does not indicate which direction a break would take.

For now, Bitcoin trades below its $87,500 yearly open, with the Fed decision and the options expiry two days apart. Implied volatility shows traders pricing little movement ahead of the October 28 meeting.
