Bitcoin, Torture and a Manhattan Townhouse: Crypto Investor Accused of Grisly Kidnapping
A crypto millionaire faces severe charges after allegedly torturing a tourist over a Bitcoin dispute in NYC.
In one of the most disturbing crypto-related cases in recent memory, 37-year-old investor John Woeltz is facing serious criminal charges after allegedly abducting and torturing an Italian tourist in a luxury Manhattan apartment. Prosecutors say the ordeal, which lasted over two weeks, was a calculated attempt to extract the victim’s Bitcoin credentials.
According to police, the victim, a 28-year-old man from Italy, arrived in New York on May 6 at Woeltz’s request. The two had previously conducted business, but their relationship had reportedly soured. Upon his arrival, the man was allegedly trapped inside a high-end SoHo rental where he endured brutal physical abuse, psychological coercion, and forced drug intake.
Authorities say Woeltz confiscated the tourist's passport, held him under surveillance, and subjected him to increasingly violent tactics — including electrocution and threats with a chainsaw — all in an effort to gain access to his digital wallet. Photographic evidence found by investigators reportedly depicts the victim restrained and visibly injured. Torture instruments and a firearm were recovered at the scene.
The situation came to light on May 23 when the victim managed to escape and flagged down a traffic officer. He was later hospitalized in stable condition. That same day, Woeltz was arrested and charged with kidnapping, second-degree assault, unlawful imprisonment, and illegal firearm possession. He is being held without bail.
Adding another layer to the case, 24-year-old Beatrice Folchi — said to be Woeltz’s assistant — was also detained. She was initially charged with first-degree kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment, but the district attorney’s office has since postponed formal prosecution pending further investigation.
Woeltz, originally from Kentucky, had cultivated an image of affluence in crypto circles, reportedly residing in a rented townhouse valued at over $30,000 per month. Now, his fall from grace raises questions not only about personal accountability but also about the vulnerability of investors in a largely unregulated financial ecosystem.
This case underscores a growing concern: as the crypto industry continues to attract vast sums of money and a new class of investors, it also draws in actors willing to bypass legal and ethical boundaries in pursuit of wealth. With digital assets at stake and trust so easily broken, the need for stricter oversight becomes harder to ignore.
