Bitcoin Retreats Below $120K as Trump Issues Trade Ultimatum to Russia
Bitcoin slips under $120K after President Trump threatens 100% tariffs on Russia without a peace deal in 50 days.
Bitcoin's recent rally was abruptly interrupted as the leading cryptocurrency fell below $120,000 on Monday following aggressive geopolitical posturing from U.S. President Donald Trump. The dip comes just hours after BTC reached a new all-time high of over $123,000, underscoring the market's vulnerability to macro-political developments.
In a surprise statement, Trump issued a 50-day ultimatum to Russia to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine or face "very severe tariffs" of up to 100%. "You’d call them secondary tariffs," he warned, indicating the scope would include countries continuing to trade oil with Russia.
According to reports from CNN citing White House officials, the administration is also preparing to route U.S. weapons through European allies to bolster Ukraine's defense. The President's hardline rhetoric marks a shift from his campaign promise to end the Eastern European conflict swiftly and reflects escalating tensions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
This is not the first time Trump’s policies have rattled the crypto markets. In April, similar tariff threats pushed Bitcoin below $75,000—its lowest in five months at the time. Although recent announcements, such as impending sanctions on the EU and Mexico, had little effect over the weekend, Monday’s warning triggered a sharper reaction.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading under $120,000, with a decline of over $3,000 since the morning peak. Analysts attribute the swift pullback to investor anxiety over potential market disruptions stemming from global trade frictions and sanctions.
The sudden volatility highlights how sensitive digital assets remain to international politics. While Bitcoin had surged more than $15,000 in less than a week, propelled by institutional demand and bullish sentiment, Trump’s ultimatum served as a stark reminder of the geopolitical variables that can swiftly undermine investor confidence.
With just 50 days on the clock for Russia to respond, the crypto sector could face further turbulence. Market participants are advised to monitor both diplomatic developments and monetary policy shifts that could define Bitcoin’s trajectory in the coming weeks.
