Bitcoin Faces New Rift as Jimmy Song Condemns Core Developers Over OP_Return
Jimmy Song criticizes Bitcoin Core for lifting OP_Return limits, fueling community backlash and migration to Bitcoin Knots.
Bitcoin is once again at the center of a heated ideological battle. Jimmy Song, one of the ecosystem’s most vocal developers and advocates, has publicly denounced Bitcoin Core developers for what he describes as a “fiat mentality” in their decision to remove the OP_Return data limit in the forthcoming Bitcoin Core 30 upgrade.
At the heart of the controversy is the OP_Return function, which allows users to embed non-monetary data into Bitcoin transactions. Historically capped at 80 bytes, this limit has been a safeguard to prevent excessive blockchain bloat. The upcoming release, however, eliminates the restriction — a move that Song argues betrays Bitcoin’s monetary purpose and risks undermining its decentralization.
“The idea that spam is difficult to define, and because of this ambiguity, we shouldn’t be making any distinctions at all in the software, is a time-wasting argument from fiat politics,” Song argued. In his view, non-monetary uses of Bitcoin constitute “spam,” and ignoring that reality is a political maneuver to avoid addressing the long-term implications of the change.
The community appears to share his concern. The GitHub pull request to lift the OP_Return cap was widely criticized by node operators and users, yet it was pushed through regardless. The tension has already triggered parallels to Bitcoin’s infamous block size wars from 2015 to 2017, which culminated in the Bitcoin Cash fork. Some observers are now speculating whether “OP_Return wars” could end in another split.
A more immediate consequence has been a sharp migration away from Bitcoin Core toward Bitcoin Knots, an alternative implementation of the protocol. Knots preserves strict data size rules, aligning with those who see unrestricted non-monetary use as a threat to Bitcoin’s accessibility. In less than a year, Bitcoin Knots has grown from powering just 1% of nodes to commanding nearly 20% of the network — a historic shift that highlights the depth of discontent.
The implications for decentralization are significant. Since Bitcoin’s launch in 2009, the blockchain’s relatively modest 680 gigabyte size has allowed individuals to run nodes on consumer-grade hardware costing as little as $300. This accessibility has been central to Bitcoin’s democratic ethos, ensuring that power over consensus rules remains widely distributed. By contrast, higher-throughput chains often demand commercial-grade equipment costing tens of thousands of dollars, concentrating influence in the hands of wealthy actors and corporations.
Supporters of Bitcoin Knots argue that by enforcing strict data controls, the protocol can preserve this critical balance. Critics of Core’s decision fear that unchecked growth in non-monetary data could make node operation prohibitively expensive, gradually centralizing control.
Whether this dispute culminates in another hard fork remains to be seen, but the sharp rhetoric from Song and the rapid migration to Knots suggest that Bitcoin is entering another decisive moment. As the network matures, the question remains: will it stay true to its minimalist, monetary-first ethos, or evolve into a more expansive data platform at the risk of its own decentralization?
