Binance has executed a series of high-value Ethereum transfers to market maker Wintermute as ETH trades above $4,000, sparking speculation about market impact. Data from Arkham Intelligence indicates that the crypto exchange moved assets to Wintermute-linked wallets within hours of the token’s recent price surge.

Initial transfers were modest, ranging between 250 and 500 ETH, before scaling up to batches of over 1,800 ETH per transaction. Some exceeded 3,000 ETH—valued at approximately $12 million each. Over a four-hour span, one notable transfer totaled 8,000 ETH. In total, the exchange dispersed tens of thousands of ETH across multiple Wintermute-associated addresses, including Bybit, Kraken, Gate, and internal market-making wallets.

The timing coincided with Ethereum’s climb from roughly $3,800 to a peak of $4,055, its highest level in months. However, momentum slowed after the outflows began. Such transfers from exchange wallets to market makers often precede significant trades, prompting analysts to caution that Ethereum’s rally could face short-term pressure if the moved tokens are intended for selling.

Conversely, if the transfers support liquidity provision or arbitrage strategies, the price impact could be neutral or even positive. The transactions occurred alongside broader market turbulence, with $188.7 million in liquidations and a brief retracement before ETH stabilized above the $4,000 threshold.

At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading at $4,245, up 7% in the past 24 hours, with daily trading volume approaching $42 billion. Whether $4,000 solidifies as a support level or becomes a temporary high remains a key question for traders.

Wintermute’s role in Ethereum trading is well-documented, including prior acquisitions through over-the-counter platforms such as Galaxy and FalconX. However, its exact involvement in the latest transfers remains undisclosed, and Binance has yet to comment on the movements.

Concerns over transparency and liquidity management have grown following reports of an unannounced 82,500 SOL transfer to Wintermute. Some market observers warn that such opaque activity could amplify volatility and impact the pricing of governance tokens and other liquid assets.

The developments come as Wintermute expands into the U.S. market, opening a New York office to launch OTC products domestically. CEO Evgeny Gaevoy has expressed optimism about the regulatory outlook, but the firm plans to maintain a lean U.S. staff.
