Binance Drops 2h44m of Blue Ocean Data From US Stock Perp Funding
A connectivity failure at US overnight trading venue Blue Ocean led Binance to exclude nearly three hours of premium index data from the 08:00 UTC funding calculation on its US stock perps, exposing the third-party risk behind TradFi perpetuals.
A network failure at a US overnight trading venue knocked out nearly three hours of equity pricing, and Binance decided its stock perp traders would not pay for it. The exchange excluded premium index data from 03:46 UTC to 06:30 UTC, about 2 hours and 44 minutes, from the 08:00 UTC funding calculation on Oct. 21 for its TradFi perpetual contracts tied to US equities.
The venue was Blue Ocean, a US overnight alternative trading system. Binance's own post did not name it. It cited only "one of the largest US overnight alternative trading systems."
What Blue Ocean said
Blue Ocean's service status page shows the venue halted all trading at 11:46:41 p.m. ET on Oct. 20 and resumed at 2:30 a.m. ET. It blamed "network connectivity issues at our external network provider impacting client connectivity."
The fallout reached beyond Binance. Seoul Economic Daily reported that the failure halted or delayed daytime US stock quotes at many Korean brokerages. Orders through other venues kept executing, while unfilled orders routed to Blue Ocean could be canceled.
Binance's reasoning
Shunyet Jan, Binance head of exchange and trading, framed the move as protecting traders from a problem they did not cause.
"Traders shouldn't pay for an outage they didn't cause,"

Jan added that the adjustment "kept the distorted period out of funding, so what users pay follows the real market." Binance pointed to Bybit's SOXL perp, where funding swung from 0.0000% to -0.1299% during the same period.
Funding is the periodic payment between longs and shorts that keeps a perp anchored to its reference price. Feed it garbage and money moves between traders for no market reason. Binance's methodology blends live vendor data, orderbook-derived models and smoothing techniques.
Trading on Binance itself was not reported as halted, and positions were not reported as liquidated or frozen because of the adjustment.
Open questions on timing
When Binance told users is less clear. Its official news account posted the notice on Binance Square at 07:21 UTC, well after the outage window opened. One report puts a Binance support notice at roughly 03:17 UTC, before the window began. Nobody has reconciled the two times.
Why it matters
The fix is clean. The risk behind it is not. Every new asset class Binance lists adds a dependency on third-party infrastructure, and an outage at an overnight venue becomes the trader's problem even when Binance's own systems run fine. When a primary input goes patchy for nearly three hours, smoothing only does so much. Gaps in traditional market plumbing can distort pricing on around-the-clock crypto derivatives, and this was a live demo.
The timing matters as Binance leans harder into equities. Its bStocks product crossed $1 billion in assets on Oct. 15, and the exchange recently added tokenized JPMorgan and Eli Lilly shares as margin collateral. More volume in stock-linked products means more exposure to the overnight data underneath them.
For traders in these perps, the takeaway is simple: know which venue sets your reference price before you size up off-hours.
