BBVA Opens Crypto Trading to Spanish Retail Clients Amid Regulatory Clarity
BBVA enables Bitcoin and Ethereum trading for retail clients in Spain, expanding regulated crypto access via its mobile app.
Spanish banking giant BBVA has launched cryptocurrency trading and storage services for retail customers in Spain, signaling a major expansion of digital asset access through traditional banking channels. As of July 2025, all adult customers can now buy, sell, and hold Bitcoin and Ethereum directly through the BBVA mobile app.
The rollout follows BBVA’s formal application to Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) in March 2025, securing compliance under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. With this regulatory approval, BBVA becomes one of the first major European banks to offer fully regulated retail crypto services in its home market.
Gonzalo Rodríguez, BBVA’s Head of Retail Banking in Spain, described the initiative as a step toward accessibility: “We want to make it easier for our retail customers in Spain to invest in crypto assets with a simple solution on their cell phones.”
Unlike many platforms, BBVA manages custody independently, without involving third-party service providers. Clients retain full control of their assets and execute transactions themselves through the app. Importantly, BBVA does not offer investment advice alongside the service, focusing strictly on infrastructure and accessibility.
The Spanish launch follows BBVA’s earlier forays into crypto services via subsidiaries in Switzerland (2021) and Turkey (2023). Spain marks the first time the bank has made these offerings directly available to the general public, underlining its commitment to expanding access within a clear regulatory framework.
Francisco Maroto, Head of Digital Assets at BBVA, confirmed plans to broaden the offering: future updates will include additional cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and tokenized real-world assets such as bonds and ETFs.
BBVA’s move places it in alignment with a broader industry shift. Other banking heavyweights like JPMorgan Chase and Standard Chartered have also integrated crypto services in recent years, reflecting growing institutional confidence in regulated digital asset frameworks.
With MiCA ushering in a harmonized legal landscape for crypto across the EU, BBVA’s expansion suggests that consumer-facing crypto integration is no longer speculative—it’s becoming a core feature of forward-thinking banking.
