Aztec Tierra V6 Fixes Critical V5 Bug, Doubles Proof Speed
Aztec Foundation launched Tierra, Alpha V6, on its privacy Ethereum L2. It fixes a critical V5 bug, doubles proof speed to about one second and cuts Ethereum message delivery from two minutes to 12 seconds. Builders must recompile and redeploy.
One second per private proof. Twelve seconds to move a message from Ethereum, down from an average of two minutes. That is the headline math on Aztec Tierra, designated Alpha V6, which the Aztec Foundation launched Tuesday on its privacy-focused Ethereum layer-2 network.
The upgrade also resolves vulnerabilities from earlier versions, including a critical issue discovered in V5.
Client-side proofs for private transactions now take about one second on a standard device, twice as fast as before. The new message architecture speeds up deposits from Ethereum.
Security changes
Tierra adds an AI-powered security testing harness and formal verification of core cryptographic components, including the proving system. Aztec says the network has more than 3,000 validators, no centralized sequencer and no privileged viewing keys.
The V5 bug sat unpatched until the full network could migrate. An Aztec spokesperson said that is inherent to the design:
"Because Aztec is a decentralized network, if a critical vulnerability is discovered, the entire network must upgrade to the new version to implement the fix,"

The spokesperson added that there are plans to make future upgrades faster.
Migration cost for builders
The upgrade is not drop-in. The new rollup requires contract recompilation and new addresses. V5 gets roughly 30 days of funded migration support.
Apps and branding
Apps launching or preparing to launch include zk.money, Galactica (private AI inference), Nemi (private perpetuals), Nulo (a private browser wallet), Rolling Chat, Xochi, Nyx and Olla. Aztec Labs relaunched the zk.money privacy wallet earlier on this network.
Aztec also introduced a new brand and website, aiming to become the platform for unstoppable private apps.
"Privacy shouldn't be something you have to request or trust someone else to protect. It should be built into the network."
Zac Williamson
Joe Andrews said that with Tierra and zk.money, "users can deposit directly from any Ethereum wallet and make lightning-fast private transactions without complicated bridging workflows."
Aztec raised $17 million in an earlier funding round.
What it means
Two minutes to 12 seconds on deposits. Proofs at one second. Both are direct usability gains.
The patch timeline is the open issue. A network with 3,000-plus validators and no central operator fixes critical bugs through a coordinated, network-wide upgrade, not a hotfix. Aztec's stated plan to speed up future upgrades is the thing to track. Aztec has also set a 2030 deadline for full post-quantum migration.
