UK’s Union Jack Oil Turns to Bitcoin Mining to Monetize Stranded Gas
Union Jack Oil plans to mine Bitcoin with unused gas from its West Newton site, creating early revenue and exploring a Bitcoin treasury.
Union Jack Oil, a publicly traded UK-based energy company, is entering the Bitcoin mining industry through an innovative strategy that seeks to convert stranded gas into early revenue. In partnership with Rathlin Energy and Texas-based 360 Energy, the firm plans to deploy mining rigs at its West Newton gas site, turning previously idle resources into digital assets.
This marks one of the UK’s first known "oil-to-crypto" initiatives. Under a non-binding letter of intent, the companies aim to use 360 Energy’s In-Field Computing technology to convert natural gas directly into electricity, powering on-site Bitcoin mining infrastructure.
According to Executive Chairman David Bramhill, the project is not just a stopgap solution, but a strategic pivot: “Onshore developers and producers have been forced to think outside the box... This is an innovative approach offering strong scope for a sustainable return.”
The West Newton field was initially discovered in 2019 and ranks among the UK’s largest onshore gas finds. However, it has remained undeveloped due to planning delays and regulatory roadblocks. Instead of waiting for full-scale infrastructure approvals, Union Jack intends to harness the gas on-site, sidestepping conventional energy supply chains.
If successful, the initiative could lead to the creation of a corporate Bitcoin treasury—a significant move in a sector traditionally distant from digital assets. Bramhill hinted at this broader strategy in the company’s latest operations update.
Union Jack's decision reflects a growing trend among energy companies to use stranded or flared gas for crypto mining. This model has already seen successful deployments globally. In North Dakota, ConocoPhillips piloted a program to direct excess gas to miners. Argentina’s Tecpetrol followed suit, and in Canada, AgriFORCE is expanding a similar operation.
By leveraging modular, on-site computing systems, firms avoid the need for expensive pipelines or grid access. The result is reduced waste, accelerated monetization, and increased energy efficiency.
This shift signals a new convergence between fossil fuels and blockchain technologies. As environmental pressures mount and regulations evolve, converting stranded energy into Bitcoin could offer both a practical and profitable alternative.
