Starknet Loses Steam After Vitalik Buterin’s $1M STRK Transfer Sparks Market Sell-Off
Vitalik Buterin’s $1M STRK donation triggers a short-term sell-off, halting Starknet’s recovery amid broader crypto weakness.
Starknet’s (STRK) recent rally came to an abrupt pause after Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin transferred more than 6.29 million STRK tokens, worth roughly $1.09 million, to the Methuselah Foundation, a non-profit medical research organization. The subsequent sale of part of those tokens by the foundation triggered renewed bearish sentiment, weighing on the Layer-2 network’s recovery momentum.
STRK had been one of the few digital assets demonstrating strength amid a broader crypto downturn, climbing 16% from $0.1529 to an intraday high of $0.1779 on Thursday. However, the optimism faded as on-chain data from Lookonchain revealed that Buterin’s donation coincided with the market’s cooling phase. Within half an hour of receiving the tokens, Methuselah Foundation sold around 607,318 STRK, securing 24.15 ETH (approximately $104,000).
The market interpreted the transaction as a bearish signal. Though Buterin’s move was philanthropic rather than strategic, the sale injected new supply into the market at a delicate time—when traders were betting on short-term gains following a week of strong performance. Starknet had risen over 10% in the past 24 hours and 25% over the month, decoupling briefly from broader market weakness.
The wider crypto market, however, remained under pressure. The global market capitalization slipped by more than 2% in the last 24 hours, falling to around $4.03 trillion at press time. As risk sentiment weakened, the added STRK liquidity from the foundation’s sale exacerbated downward pressure, pushing the token back down to $0.161, a 10% intraday drop from its peak.
Analysts noted that the episode illustrates how large token transfers—especially those involving prominent figures like Buterin—can rapidly alter market psychology. Even when conducted transparently and for charitable purposes, such movements often spark speculative reactions that magnify volatility.
Despite the short-term turbulence, Starknet’s fundamentals remain robust. The Ethereum Layer-2 scaling network continues to expand its ecosystem through new projects, staking features, and community-driven initiatives. Recent launches, including Aura Cards, aim to enhance social engagement via the platform’s integration with X (formerly Twitter), helping sustain user activity even amid price headwinds.
STRK’s 24-hour trading volumes surged by over 100%, indicating heightened market participation rather than a full-scale sell-off. Some analysts view the current dip as a temporary correction, suggesting that Starknet’s strong developer activity and growing DeFi adoption could help stabilize prices in the near term.
Still, with broader market sentiment skewing bearish, any further sales by large holders could extend STRK’s downside. The incident underscores the delicate balance between transparency and market sensitivity in the crypto ecosystem—where even philanthropic gestures by high-profile figures can have unintended price consequences.
