Bitmain is the dominant global supplier of cryptocurrency mining machines, and its hardware powers operations from small mining warehouses to large industrial-scale facilities. Among its U.S. customers is a project reportedly backed by two of former President Donald Trump’s sons, which purchased around 16,000 mining rigs from the company. The scale of Bitmain’s footprint has made it a critical player in the digital asset economy, but also a focal point of concern for policymakers wary of foreign control over essential technologies.
According to individuals familiar with the investigation, the review intensified after officials identified potential vulnerabilities associated with Bitmain’s equipment. The implications go beyond cryptocurrency mining. The investigation forms part of a larger effort by the United States to reduce exposure to foreign technologies that could be leveraged for strategic advantage. Washington has previously restricted the use of telecom and surveillance equipment from Chinese manufacturers, arguing that embedded access points or covert backdoors could compromise national security. For the cryptocurrency mining sector, the probe introduces heightened regulatory uncertainty. Bitmain, meanwhile, has not been formally accused of wrongdoing, and the details of the ongoing investigation remain largely confidential.
