Ripple Redefines Institutional Crypto: Prime Brokerage Debuts in the U.S. as RLUSD Surpasses $1 Billion
Ripple launches its U.S. prime brokerage as RLUSD surpasses $1B, signaling a bold push into institutional crypto finance.
Ripple has taken a decisive step into institutional finance, unveiling its U.S. prime brokerage platform, Ripple Prime, on the same day its RLUSD stablecoin surpassed a $1 billion market capitalization—just one year after launch. The dual milestone signals Ripple’s intent to position itself as a dominant bridge between traditional finance and digital assets.
The rollout of Ripple Prime follows the company’s acquisition of Hidden Road, a multi-asset prime brokerage firm whose infrastructure now powers Ripple’s institutional offering. With this move, Ripple provides clients access to foreign exchange, derivatives, swaps, fixed income, and digital assets under one integrated roof. Institutional traders can now execute over-the-counter (OTC) spot transactions across major digital assets—including XRP and RLUSD—while managing cross-margin exposure across portfolios.
“The launch of OTC spot execution capabilities complements our existing suite of OTC and cleared derivatives services in digital assets,” said Michael Higgins, International CEO of Ripple Prime. The firm’s expanded reach gives financial institutions the same sophisticated toolkit they expect from Wall Street brokers, but tailored for crypto markets.
The acquisition of Hidden Road effectively gives Ripple the missing link it needed to compete at the institutional level: prime brokerage infrastructure. In traditional markets, prime brokers are critical intermediaries, giving hedge funds and asset managers access to liquidity, leverage, and settlement networks. Ripple’s adaptation of that model to digital assets could significantly lower the barriers preventing large institutions from entering the crypto ecosystem.
Meanwhile, RLUSD’s rapid ascent past $1 billion in market value highlights the company’s momentum. Marketed as a “trusted and transparent stablecoin for institutions,” RLUSD maintains a one-to-one backing with the U.S. dollar. Its integration with Ripple Prime, GTreasury, and Rail forms part of a larger strategy aimed at streamlining institutional settlement processes across borders. Ripple’s vision is clear: RLUSD and XRP working together to enable faster, more compliant global transactions.
Despite the milestone, RLUSD still trails its competitors, ranking 13th among stablecoins by market capitalization according to CoinGecko. Yet Ripple’s broader institutional ecosystem gives it a strategic advantage that extends beyond token metrics. Rather than offering fragmented financial products, Ripple is constructing a unified architecture combining a trading platform, a stable settlement asset, and a bridge currency.
The move represents more than corporate expansion—it reflects crypto’s ongoing convergence with traditional financial systems. As banks and funds increasingly seek digital asset exposure, Ripple’s entry into prime brokerage territory could accelerate institutional adoption across the board. Still, not all market signals were positive: XRP fell more than 5% on the day, tracking broader market anxiety following new policy hints from the Federal Reserve.
Ripple’s message, however, remains confident: as the lines blur between crypto and conventional finance, the company intends to be the infrastructure provider at the center of that fusion.
