The legal saga between Ripple Labs and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken another turn, as both parties request a delay in appellate proceedings to finalize a proposed $50 million settlement. The joint motion, submitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, aims to pause proceedings until August 15, 2025, allowing more time for potential resolution outside of court.

The case, which has spanned multiple years and phases, stems from the SEC’s allegations that Ripple unlawfully sold XRP as an unregistered security. After a series of partial victories and setbacks for both sides, negotiations have led to a proposal that seeks to dissolve the permanent injunction currently restricting Ripple’s operations and to reduce the previously suggested $125 million penalty to $50 million.

Judge Analisa Torres had previously rejected a similar motion in May, ruling that the request lacked “exceptional circumstances” as required under Rule 62.1 for modifying a final judgment. Despite that rejection, the parties renewed their efforts with a revised motion filed on June 12, hoping to present a more compelling case for leniency based on active settlement talks.

On June 16, the SEC filed a status update requesting the court to suspend all appellate proceedings through mid-August, arguing that continuing the process would be inefficient if a settlement is imminent. As of now, the court has not issued a decision on this request.

This joint effort reflects a strategic pivot by both Ripple and the SEC toward a negotiated resolution, a move seen by many legal analysts as a cost-saving alternative to drawn-out litigation that could stretch into 2026. The resolution, if accepted, would not only mark a significant turning point in the high-profile regulatory clash but also potentially set a precedent for future crypto-related enforcement actions.

Despite the legal uncertainty, XRP continues to show resilience. The token is currently trading at $2.21, with a market capitalization of $130.5 billion. Market analysts suggest that a favorable outcome could remove major regulatory overhangs and restore momentum to Ripple’s business activities.

Until a decision is reached, the crypto industry watches closely, as the outcome could reshape the legal contours of U.S. crypto enforcement and influence the trajectory of digital asset innovation.
