Kansai Electric Power, one of Japan's largest utility companies, has integrated its MOACT customer rewards app with Polygon's Layer 2 network, allowing users to convert loyalty points directly into JPYC, Japan's regulated yen-pegged stablecoin, and deploy them across decentralized finance protocols through HashPort Wallet.
Customers accumulate points through normal utility interactions via the MOACT app, then convert those points to JPYC on Polygon's network. From there, the stablecoin is accessible through HashPort Wallet, opening the door to DeFi activity for what is largely a non-crypto-native user base. The friction between earning a loyalty reward and holding a functional digital asset has been reduced to a few taps.
JPYC operates under Japan's Payment Services Act, the regulatory framework established in 2017 that gave Japan one of the world's earliest and most structured approaches to digital asset oversight. That legal clarity matters here. Kansai Electric is not experimenting with an unregulated stablecoin; it is plugging into a compliant instrument that has already cleared the country's financial regulators. For enterprise adoption, that distinction is the difference between a pilot program and a scalable product.
Polygon's positioning as the infrastructure layer is deliberate. Its Layer 2 architecture processes transactions faster and at a fraction of the cost compared to Ethereum mainnet, which makes it practical for high-volume, low-value conversions typical of loyalty programs. A utility customer converting a few hundred yen worth of points cannot absorb $10 gas fees. On Polygon, that economic argument disappears. The network has built its enterprise pipeline on exactly this logic, having previously landed partnerships across gaming, media, and financial services.
Japan has moved faster than most developed economies to integrate blockchain infrastructure into regulated consumer finance. The Payment Services Act gave exchanges legal standing nearly a decade ago, and subsequent amendments have progressively clarified stablecoin issuance rules. That regulatory groundwork is what makes a partnership like this possible: a utility giant does not connect its customer-facing app to a blockchain product without legal certainty on both ends. The Kansai Electric integration is a logical extension of a framework Japan has been building for years.
Comparable loyalty tokenization efforts elsewhere have produced mixed results. Starbucks wound down its Odyssey NFT rewards program in 2024 after struggling with user engagement, and several airline mileage tokenization pilots have stalled at proof-of-concept stage. The difference in Japan's case may be the stablecoin bridge. Converting points to a spendable, yield-accessible asset is a more compelling value proposition than converting them to a collectible. Users who convert JPYC can use it as money rather than hold it as a memento.
Real adoption barriers remain. The majority of Kansai Electric's customer base has no prior experience with DeFi wallets or stablecoin mechanics. HashPort Wallet lowers the technical floor, but onboarding non-crypto users into any self-custody product carries inherent dropout risk. Merchant acceptance of JPYC and liquidity depth in the DeFi markets where it circulates will also determine whether converted points actually get spent or simply accumulate in dormant wallets.
For Polygon, the partnership extends a track record of enterprise integrations that competitors on other Layer 2 networks are actively trying to replicate. For Japan's digital asset market, it adds another data point to the argument that regulated, utility-backed stablecoin use cases can reach consumers who would never seek out crypto independently. Whether that path from loyalty points to DeFi becomes a mainstream on-ramp depends on execution, not architecture.
