Polygon Prepares Permissionless Burn of 100 Million POL Tokens

Polygon is moving to permanently remove 100 million POL tokens from circulation through a permissionless burn mechanism, with the underlying contracts already deployed on testnet and awaiting final sign-off from the project's Security Council.

Co-founder Sandeep Nailwal confirmed the implementation details this week, noting that the initial burn is just the first phase of a broader supply-management overhaul. Once the Security Council signatures are in place, the protocol will also introduce recurring base-fee burns that any community member can trigger on a quarterly basis, rather than requiring a formal governance vote each time.

The community-callable design is the more structurally significant piece. Most token burn programs in crypto are either one-time treasury decisions or baked into protocol mechanics with no external trigger. Polygon's quarterly model sits between those two approaches: the burn is permissionless, meaning no single entity controls whether it happens, but it still requires someone to call the contract. That creates a light accountability layer while keeping the process decentralized. Whether community members will reliably participate each quarter remains an open question, and low engagement could blunt the deflationary effect the team is targeting.

The mechanism draws an obvious comparison to Ethereum's EIP-1559, which began burning base fees in August 2021 and has since removed well over four million ETH from supply. That precedent shaped how nearly every major Layer-2 network thinks about fee revenue. Polygon is now applying a similar logic to POL, the token that replaced MATIC following last year's migration, though the quarterly cadence and permissionless trigger represent a distinct design choice rather than a direct copy. Where Ethereum's burn happens automatically with every block, Polygon's will require active initiation, which adds a social coordination element that Ethereum's does not have.

Reducing supply does not generate new demand, attract developers, or improve transaction throughput. If the network is not growing its user base, a smaller float produces a higher price per token in the short term but does not change the underlying fundamentals. There is also a real tradeoff in burning tokens that could otherwise be directed toward ecosystem grants, staking incentives, or developer programs. Polygon has been competing aggressively for application deployments against rivals including Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, and every token burned is a token that cannot be used as an incentive.

That said, the optics of a permissionless, community-triggered burn carry genuine signaling value. It positions POL holders as active participants in supply policy rather than passive recipients of decisions made by a foundation or core team. For a network that has staked much of its identity on decentralization, the governance design matters as much as the raw token count being removed. The 100 million POL figure represents a meaningful share of circulating supply, and if the quarterly mechanism becomes a reliable fixture, the cumulative deflationary pressure over several years could be substantial.

The burn contracts moving to testnet suggests the timeline to mainnet deployment is measured in weeks, not months, assuming Security Council approval proceeds without complications. Polygon has not announced a specific mainnet date as of this writing.
