MetaMask, the leading non-custodial crypto wallet, has officially expanded beyond Ethereum compatibility by adding support for the Solana network. The update, launched on May 27, enables users to hold and manage SOL and Solana-based tokens directly within MetaMask’s browser extension. Mobile support is expected in the coming weeks.

The move ends MetaMask’s years-long exclusivity with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) networks, marking a strategic pivot towards full multi-chain functionality. “Solana is just the start,” MetaMask stated. “We’ll be adding more non-EVM networks over the coming months, to make wallet juggling a thing of the past. One wallet, one interface, every network.”

Previously, users with assets on Solana and Ethereum needed separate wallets—MetaMask for EVM and Phantom or other tools for Solana. With this new integration, MetaMask aims to streamline user experience by consolidating wallet functions into a single platform.

However, the competition remains fierce. Phantom, the top Solana-native wallet, already offers multi-network compatibility, including support for Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Polygon. MetaMask hopes to differentiate itself through its robust security features, which include transaction simulations, malicious dApp detection, and real-time alerts.

Despite never experiencing a protocol-level breach, MetaMask users have faced individual threats such as phishing attacks and social engineering. One notable incident in 2023 involved a mass phishing campaign via hacked Namecheap email systems.

Nevertheless, the platform’s popularity continues to grow, and with this new Solana integration, it is positioning itself as a leading hub for all blockchain assets. The move reflects a broader industry trend toward wallet interoperability and improved user experience across ecosystems.
