Meme Coin Meltdown: SPX and FARTCOIN Lead Sector's Friday the 13th Freefall
Meme coins plummet as SPX and FARTCOIN lose over 20% amid market-wide crypto downturn triggered by geopolitical conflict.
The meme coin market experienced a dramatic downturn on Friday, June 13, as geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran rattled global crypto markets. Dubbed the "Friday the 13th Meme Coin Massacre," the day saw SPX6900 (SPX) and Fartcoin (FARTCOIN) lead a sector-wide collapse, plummeting by 22% and 17%, respectively.
Meme coins, often characterized by their community-driven hype and humorous branding, have shown extreme volatility during market stress. According to CoinMarketCap, the total market capitalization of meme coins plunged from nearly $65 billion on June 11 to around $55 billion within hours—an 8% decline fueled by a broader sell-off.
SPX and FARTCOIN, both standout performers in the recent meme coin rally, have now reversed course sharply. SPX, once ranked as the fifth-largest meme coin with a market cap exceeding $1 billion, has seen its valuation erode rapidly. Similarly, FARTCOIN's whimsical branding hasn’t shielded it from the sell pressure gripping the market.
Other notable meme tokens including Pepe (PEPE), Bonk (BONK), dogwifhat (WIF), Floki (FLOKI), Pudgy Penguins (PENGU), and Peanut the Squirrel (PNUT) also suffered double-digit losses over a 24-hour period.
Even the blue chips of meme coins weren’t immune. Dogecoin (DOGE), the sector’s flagship token, dipped 7% to approximately $0.17. Shiba Inu (SHIB), its closest competitor, dropped 6%, touching its lowest price since April before settling at around $0.0000117.
While meme coins typically outperform during speculative surges, their fragility during crises is well-documented. These assets often lack the fundamentals and liquidity resilience of larger cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum, making them highly susceptible to sudden, severe corrections.
Interestingly, a few lesser-known meme projects such as REKT, AURA, and TST managed to buck the trend, posting modest gains. However, these are outliers in what has otherwise been a sea of red.
Investors are reminded that meme coins, despite their popularity and viral appeal, remain among the riskiest segments of the crypto market. As always, due diligence, conservative position sizing, and awareness of macro conditions are crucial before entering these speculative arenas.
