Ethereum Whales Accumulate 320,000 ETH as Shorts Surge 13,000%
Large Ethereum holders accumulated over 320,000 ETH in a single week worth $848 million, while short positions surged 13,000%. The setup could trigger a bear trap if bulls reclaim $2,800 resistance or validate bearish bets if they fail.
Ethereum Whales Accumulate 320,000 ETH as Shorts Surge 13,000%
Large Ethereum holders added more than 320,000 ETH in a single week, worth roughly $848 million at current prices, while short positions on the asset simultaneously jumped 13,000%, creating a setup that analysts say could resolve violently in either direction.
The accumulation data comes from on-chain analyst Ali Charts, who noted that large ETH transfers also spiked 500% during the same period. That combination, significant wallet-level buying paired with a surge in transfer volume, mirrors patterns that preceded major ETH rallies in prior cycles. In 2021, comparable whale accumulation phases preceded the run to $4,800. Whether history repeats depends heavily on whether ETH can clear the $2,800 to $3,000 resistance band it has failed to hold multiple times over the past two years.
ETH is currently trading near $2,650, sitting below that critical zone. Reclaiming $3,000 would represent a 13% move from here; a $5,000 target would require an 89% gain. Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, cited Robinhood Chain as the primary catalyst for that projection, arguing the layer-2 network built on Ethereum infrastructure would drive meaningful demand for ETH. That thesis depends on Robinhood Chain achieving adoption at scale, which remains unproven. Hayes put the timeline at approximately one year.
"ETH could reach $5,000 within about a year because of Robinhood Chain."
Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX
The short interest surge deserves careful interpretation. A 13,000% increase in short positions is not automatically bearish. If those positions were opened below current prices, a move through $2,800 could trigger a cascade of forced buybacks, compressing supply and accelerating price upward. That is the bear trap scenario. The counter-reading is less comfortable: sophisticated traders who built those shorts may have done so with conviction, pricing in a failure to break resistance and a subsequent leg down. Both scenarios are live.
US spot Ether ETF flows add another layer to the picture. The products recorded $689.8 million in net inflows, a figure that reflects sustained institutional appetite even as price has stalled below resistance. For context, Solana ETFs hit a record $188 million in inflows in a single session recently, suggesting institutional capital is rotating across the broader altcoin space rather than concentrating exclusively in Ethereum. ETH's $689.8 million figure covers a longer window but still signals that the institutional bid has not evaporated.
Large transfers can represent redistribution across wallets controlled by the same entity, or profit-taking routed through intermediary addresses, rather than clean net buying. On-chain data captures movement, not intent. That caveat does not invalidate the signal, but it does mean the 320,000 ETH figure should be read as a directional indicator rather than a confirmed demand floor.
The structural picture for Ethereum has also shifted at the protocol level. Vitalik Buterin recently confirmed that the Hegota upgrade will be Ethereum's last conventional fork, with the protocol pivoting to quantum-safe cryptography afterward. That transition introduces long-term security improvements but also a period of technical uncertainty that some holders may be pricing in.
The immediate test is mechanical. Bulls need to reclaim $2,800 to put pressure on the short stack and validate the accumulation thesis. A failure at that level, particularly if macro conditions soften, would leave the 320,000 ETH of recent buying exposed and the $5,000 target looking distant. The 13,000% short surge means the next directional move, whichever way it breaks, is unlikely to be small.
