Coinbase Revives Stablecoin Liquidity Program to Strengthen DeFi Ecosystem
Coinbase revives its Stablecoin Bootstrap Fund to expand USDC and EURC liquidity across top DeFi protocols.
Coinbase has reintroduced its Stablecoin Bootstrap Fund in a strategic move to bolster liquidity across decentralized finance (DeFi) markets. The initiative, announced on August 12, aims to enhance the availability and utility of USD Coin (USDC) and Euro Coin (EURC) by injecting capital into key lending and trading platforms.
The first wave of funding targets established protocols such as Aave and Morpho on Ethereum, where the focus will be on stabilizing lending pools and improving borrowing efficiency. On Solana, Coinbase is supporting Kamino and Jupiter to facilitate token swaps and optimize liquidity routing. By distributing funds across multiple chains, the company seeks to reduce slippage, boost trading efficiency, and provide early-stage projects with a crucial liquidity foundation.
USDC currently underpins roughly $8.9 billion in total value locked (TVL) and facilitates around $2.7 trillion in annual on-chain transactions. The stablecoin is widely integrated across major networks, including Ethereum, Base, Solana, and Sui.
This renewed effort echoes Coinbase’s 2019 initiative, which seeded USDC liquidity into platforms like Uniswap, Compound, and dYdX, contributing to the token’s rise in DeFi adoption. However, the competitive landscape has evolved significantly since then. With total DeFi TVL hovering near $160 billion and Tether (USDT) maintaining dominance in stablecoin market capitalization, Coinbase’s move signals an attempt to carve a stronger market presence for its stablecoins.
The relaunch also aligns with broader trends: growing DeFi trading volumes, increased institutional interest, and a clearer global regulatory framework for stablecoins. Coinbase plans to monitor the performance of its initial allocations and expand the program to other protocols as demand and adoption grow. The company envisions USDC and EURC becoming trusted settlement tools across multiple blockchains, enabling faster, cheaper, and more reliable transactions.
Still, success will hinge on several factors: developer adoption, integration speed by DeFi platforms, and sustained incentives to retain liquidity. If executed effectively, this liquidity push could position Coinbase’s stablecoins as a central pillar in the evolving DeFi infrastructure.
