Coinbase has officially reestablished its presence in India through a significant investment in CoinDCX, one of the country’s largest and most influential cryptocurrency exchanges. The U.S.-based exchange’s new stake values CoinDCX at roughly $2.45 billion, marking a renewed commitment to one of the world’s fastest-growing digital asset markets.

Although the exact size of Coinbase’s shareholding remains undisclosed, the move strengthens its ongoing relationship with CoinDCX, following earlier participation through Coinbase Ventures in previous funding rounds. The investment underscores Coinbase’s broader regional strategy to expand across Asia while aligning with local compliance and regulatory standards.

Coinbase’s relationship with India has been turbulent. The company initially launched its trading services in April 2022, leveraging the country’s UPI payment system. However, within days, regulators intervened, asserting that UPI was not authorized for cryptocurrency transactions. The ensuing regulatory friction forced Coinbase to suspend its local trading operations, effectively halting its first attempt to enter the Indian market.

Now, three years later, Coinbase’s reentry appears far more calculated and collaborative. Founded in 2018, CoinDCX serves over 15 million users and has established itself as a central player in India’s digital asset ecosystem. The platform offers a wide range of services, including trading, staking, lending, and educational programs designed to promote responsible participation in the crypto economy.

According to CoinDCX, the new funding will be directed toward enhancing compliance measures and developing secure, regulated trading infrastructure. The company emphasized that the investment will help prepare for the eventual introduction of a comprehensive crypto regulatory framework in India, which policymakers have been debating since 2022.

The timing of Coinbase’s return coincides with a broader tightening of India’s crypto environment. While the government has yet to implement formal legislation, it has introduced a 30% tax on digital asset profits and a 1% tax deducted at source on all crypto transactions—measures that have tested local exchanges’ resilience. Despite these hurdles, India remains one of the largest global markets for cryptocurrencies, home to over 100 million digital asset owners.

Coinbase’s renewed presence also reflects its continued push across the Asia-Pacific region. The company recently expanded its operations in Singapore through licensing approvals and reactivated its Japanese business, demonstrating a clear intent to strengthen its foothold across key Asian economies.

This strategic partnership positions Coinbase to play a crucial role in shaping India’s evolving crypto landscape. By supporting CoinDCX’s compliance-driven approach, the U.S. exchange is signaling confidence that regulatory clarity is on the horizon—and that India’s massive user base will play an essential role in the next phase of global digital finance.
