Cardano Faces Crucial Test as Hoskinson Promises Full Transparency in August Audit
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson plans an August audit to refute $600M ADA scandal allegations and restore trust in the blockchain’s governance.
Amid escalating controversy and serious allegations of a $600 million misappropriation of ADA, Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson has pledged full transparency through an independent audit set to be released in mid-August. The report is intended to counter what Hoskinson describes as “deeply damaging” and baseless accusations regarding Input Output Global (IOG), the company spearheading Cardano’s development.
At the heart of the scandal are claims that IOG manipulated ADA allocations during the 2021 Allegra hard fork, allegedly using a privileged “genesis key” to allocate approximately 350 million ADA to itself. The rumors gained traction in May through misleading headlines on social media, prompting widespread concern within the Cardano community and across the crypto industry.
Hoskinson strongly denied the allegations, calling them “disgusting” and warning of the long-term reputational damage they could inflict on the ecosystem. “The headlines I’ve seen are beyond damaging. They will require months if not years of work and millions of dollars to undo post-audit,” he stated in a post dated May 20.
To restore confidence and set the record straight, Hoskinson has committed to a public audit of IOG’s ADA holdings. He confirmed the report’s development is progressing on schedule and reiterated that it will be published in full during a live-streamed session. A dedicated website will also be launched to archive the audit findings along with historical documentation related to ADA's initial distribution.
Joel Telpner, Chief Legal and Policy Officer at IOG, affirmed the timeline and stressed the audit’s role in clarifying public misconceptions. Still, skepticism lingers among observers who question the audit’s scope and independence. Community members are calling for detailed methodology and third-party oversight to ensure the report’s credibility.
In response to the allegations, Hoskinson explained that the ADA tokens at the center of the scandal had, for the most part, already been claimed by their rightful owners. The remaining balance, he stated, was transferred to Intersect—a decentralized governance body within the Cardano ecosystem—after a seven-year holding period expired.
Legal action may follow. Hoskinson has indicated plans to consult a defamation law firm to explore options against individuals and entities involved in disseminating the false claims. “Meeting with the defamation law firm next week to discuss options and strategy,” he confirmed.
The forthcoming audit may mark a decisive chapter for Cardano. With confidence in the project at stake, the August report could either restore the credibility of its leadership or intensify internal rifts and external scrutiny. As crypto markets continue to rally and ADA maintains a bullish outlook, the integrity of Cardano’s foundation remains under the microscope.
