Vitalik Buterin Advocates for L1 Scaling to Strengthen Ethereum’s Network

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is calling for a tenfold increase in the network’s Layer 1 (L1) gas limit, emphasizing its importance even as Layer 2 (L2) scaling solutions continue to grow in prominence. His proposal aims to bolster Ethereum’s security, enhance censorship resistance, and simplify application development across the network.

Buterin has voiced concerns regarding the centralized nature of L2 sequencers, which could lead to censorship issues. He argues that a more scalable L1 would introduce critical force-inclusion mechanisms, allowing users to bypass L2 censorship during periods of network congestion. This would provide an essential safeguard against potential restrictions imposed by L2 operators.

A central aspect of Buterin’s proposal focuses on improving cross-L2 asset transfers, particularly for NFTs and less common assets. The increased L1 capacity would function as a safety net in cases of L2 failures or governance changes, enabling users to execute mass exit events without facing excessive gas fees.

Additionally, the scaling initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of ERC-20 token launches on L1, reducing risks associated with governance vulnerabilities in individual L2s. By increasing the base layer’s capabilities, developers could mitigate threats posed by unexpected upgrades or governance shifts within L2 environments.

The plan also seeks to streamline keystore wallet operations and improve their distribution across L2 networks, facilitating broader user adoption and smoother interoperability. Buterin envisions a future where L1’s increased capacity supports the economic viability of L2 proof submissions, ensuring trustless cross-L2 interoperability through more frequent state updates.

However, implementing this ambitious scaling upgrade presents significant challenges. Maintaining Ethereum’s security and decentralization while achieving the proposed L1 enhancements remains a critical concern. Some members of the Ethereum community have raised questions about potential centralization risks, particularly due to the increased hardware requirements for validators that such a change might entail.

In May 2024, Buterin highlighted the lack of cohesion in Ethereum’s Layer 2 expansion, advocating for improved interoperability and integration within wallet interfaces. His current proposal aligns with this vision, aiming to fortify Ethereum’s foundational layer while supporting a more seamless and censorship-resistant ecosystem for L2 solutions.
